Financial Support - MSW Program
Financing Graduate Education
Introduction
Graduate education at the Jane Addams College of Social Work (JACSW) is an important investment of time and money. That investment is the primary responsibility of the student, but the College has responsibilities also. The College provides partial support to many students in order to insure that the student body is academically talented and diverse. Furthermore, the College helps students, as much as possible, become aware of other support that will help them finance their graduate education. Normally financial support from the College and other sources meet only a portion of the financial need of qualified and eligible students.
Opportunities for financial assistance fall into two categories:
-
o Financial Aid
Student loans and work study are administered by the UIC Office of Financial Aid. Contact that office at 312-996-3126.
o Other Financial Assistance
The Office of Admissions and Financial Aid at the College can be contacted about financial assistance other than student loans and work study by telephoning 312-996-3218.
All eligible United States Citizens and permanent residents interested in being considered for JACSW financial support must file a Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA) online. This should be done as soon as possible after January 1 at www.fafsa.ed/gov.
International students cannot submit the online FAFSA. Upon admission, however, international students must submit the Declaration and Certificate of Finances Form.
Furthermore, all students should know that most financial support administered by the JACSW is need based and requires registration in 12 or more semester hours during the fall and spring semesters or 6 or more hours during the summer semester. Consequently most financial support decisions are made either after students have been admitted to the College or during the field work placement process.
Information about college administered financial support may be obtained online or from the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid at the College (Telephone: 312-996-3218; E-mail: jacswadm@uic.edu).
Important Points
The following points must be understood by all Jane Addams College of Social Work students:
1. Students have the primary responsibility for financing their graduate education and should be prepared to finance their education if they do not receive financial support from the College or other sources.
2. Submission of the Application for Financial Support does not guarantee financial support from the College.
3. The online FAFSA should be submitted between January 1 and March 1, if possible, for the next academic year. The UIC code is 001776. All students, except international students, are asked to submit the online FAFSA.
4. To receive financial support from the College and/or UIC students must be in good academic standing, be registered for the required number of semester hours, and meet any other stated requirements.
5. Students should provide the College a copy of the award announcement letter provided by the UIC Office of Financial Aid in order to insure the College is aware of their financial need.
6. Furthermore, students should inform the College of any special needs or situations having implication for financial support.
7. A statement of student loan debt from the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) or other document that shows your cumulative student loan borrowings.
8. Submit a request for financial support for the next academic year and summer as follows:
- o Current students by March 15 each year.
