Admission Requirements

THE PhD PROGRAM PREFERRED APPLICATION DEADLINE IS DECEMBER 15

The program is open to students who have obtained a master's degree in social work (MSW) and have demonstrated leadership and scholarly potential A limited number of persons with advanced degrees in other human service professions or in related social sciences are also considered for admission. Persons admitted without the MSW degree are required to complete all requirements for the master's degree before beginning doctoral courses.

Admission and other program requirements are outlined at the site for the Graduate College.The link to Doctoral application materials is available here on the College web site. An admissions committee of social work faculty oversees the admission process, reviews applications, and recommends students for admission to the program. A minimum average of 3.00 GPA (A=4.00) for the final 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of undergraduate study and for all graduate work is required for consideration. Passing scores on the Graduate Record Examination are also required. Applicants are expected to have had coursework in both basic social research and statistical methods within the seven years prior to application. Electronic submission of application forms should include a brief statement of the applicant's objectives for graduate study and a resume or a summary of the applicant's educational background and work experience. Applications are considered for fall admission only and should be submitted early for fellowship consideration by December 15th. The final deadline is February 15th, except when February 15 falls on a Saturday or Sunday; in such cases, the deadline is the first Monday following February 15th. Notification of the admission decision will be made by April 1st, except under exceptional circumstances.

ALL DOCUMENTS MUST BER SENT TO THE UIC GRADUATE UPLOAD PROCESS SYSTEM MUST BE IN PDF. FORMAT. PLEASE INFORM ALL YOUR RECOMMENDERS.

The entire application process begins with the completion of the UIC Online Graduate College Application. The department will not be aware of an applicants intentions of applying until this step is completed.
