Student Government
Jane Addams Student Government (JASG) is a student-run organization within the Jane Addams College of Social Work. There are six elected officers: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Student Affairs Chair, and Committee Liaison.  Involvement in JASG allows one to meet other students, develop leadership skills, and plan activities for the College.  The student government represents students in all Jane Addams degree programs: MSW, and PhD. Students in all programs are eligible to run for any student government office.   The Jane Addams student government office is room 4448, EPASW. The telephone number is 312-355-1341 (with voicemail). Student government has a mailbox located with the faculty mailboxes (lower left hand corner).

The Jane Addams Student Government Constitution

ARTICLE I. Organization's Name
The name of this organization shall be the Jane Addams Student Government (JASG).

ARTICLE II. Organization's Purpose
The purpose of this organization shall be to advocate on behalf of Jane Addams College of Social Work (JACSW) students, to promote a sense of community among all students, to ensure effective communication between students and JACSW faculty, administration, and staff, and to ensure equitable representation for students in all degree programs (BSW, MSW, and PhD) in matters pertaining to student welfare.

ARTICLE III. Membership Eligibility Requirements
Eligibility for membership in the JASG is limited to currently enrolled, degree-seeking students in the BSW, MSW, and PhD programs. Officers must be nominated from and elected by the college student body. All operations of the JASG shall conform with University of Illinois Board of Trustees policies regarding non-discrimination and with college policies as published in the JACSW Student Handbook.

ARTICLE IV. Office, Positions, Descriptions, and Guidelines
Section 1. Officers of JASG shall be: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Student Affairs Co-Chair, Committee Liaison, Part-time Program Liasion.

Section 2. It shall be the duty of JASG officers, when conducting elections, to seek the widest possible participation in the nomination and election process from students in the BSW, MSW, and PhD programs.

Section 3. The terms of office for elected officers shall be for one academic year.

Section 4. PRESIDENT: shall conduct meetings of the JASG, delegate responsibilities to officers, oversee operations of JASG, (including recording of minutes and disseminating information to the student body), and be the principal link between JASG and college administration. VICE PRESIDENT: shall chair subcommittees, organize student advisors, and fulfill presidential duties in the absence of the president. TREASURER: shall prepare the budget, be responsible for cash flow, monitor budget control, and issue annual reports. STUDENT AFFAIRS CHAIR: shall organize fund raising, develop organizational activities, coordinate college merchandise sales, and shall serve as a first link in student grievance procedures, if so desired, by a grieving student. COMMITTEE LIAISION: shall educate student community about college committees and recruit students for them.  PART TIME PROGRAM LIAISON: shall facilitate communication, involvement, and inclusion of part-time students in activities of the student body at large.

Section 5. Officers may be removed under the following circumstances:
a. failure to attend half or more of the scheduled JASG meetings and, as a result, 2/3 of the elected officers vote for removal; b.violation of terms of this constitution

b. violation of terms of this constitution

Section 6. If an officer is removed from office, that officer's duties will be transferred temporarily to another officer to be determined by a vote of the remaining JASG officers.

Section 7. Once a vacant position is filled, a written statement indicating a transfer of power shall be delivered to the University of Illinois Office of University Organizations and Activities by the JASG secretary.

Section 8. In the event of a vacancy in any position excluding that of president, the Associate Dean of the college shall appoint a replacement for the remainder of the term. If a vacancy occurs in the position of president, a special election shall be held within two weeks of the vacancy to fill the office. The vice president shall act as interim president until the special election has been concluded.

ARTICLE V. Meetings and Voting
Section 1. Monthly meetings of the elected officers shall be announced and convened by the president.

Section 2. A quorum for meetings shall be 2/3 of the elected officers. Official business cannot be conducted without a quorum.

ARTICLE VI. Elections 
Section 1. Elections of officers shall be held each Spring no later than the fourth Friday of March.

Section 2. Any student of the college enrolled in a degree program may vote in an election by ballot.

Section 3. Students will receive notice of elections and a list of those persons elected each Spring term. The list of elected officers will be distributed by the second Friday following the close of the election.

ARTICLE VII. Advisor
Section 1. JASG shall have as its advisor the Associate Dean unless another advisor is selected from the full?time faculty by a vote of at least 2/3 of the elected officers.

Section 2. The advisor shall be informed of and invited to the JASG meetings. The advisor shall serve as an external resource person, not a voting member.

ARTICLE VIII. Committee Election
JASG officers shall recruit students to serve on various college committees as necessary each academic year.

ARTICLE IX. Dues
No dues shall be required of any JASG member.

ARTICLE X. Funds
All funds collected by JASG shall be deposited in the appropriate University of Illinois at Chicago student organization fund account. The treasurer shall be designated to handle organizational finances and manage this account.

ARTICLES XI. Constitutional Amendments
Section 1. This constitution shall be amended by a 2/3 vote of total JASG membership.

Section 2. All proposals to amend this constitution must be submitted to the elected officers of JASG who will then oversee appropriate elections.
