In pursuing its mission, CESAR conducts policy-relevant research and evaluation studies, disseminates statistical and other information, assists in training students in substance abuse research methods and policy analysis, and provides technical assistance to agencies and organizations working in substance abuse related fields.

Criminal Justice Drug Abuse Treatment Studies (CJ-DATS) Centers. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) established CJ-DATS as a cooperative research program to explore the issues related to the complex system of offender treatment services. Nine research centers and a Coordinating Center were created in partnership with researchers, criminal justice professionals, and drug abuse treatment practitioners to form a national research infrastructure.

National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University. The mission of CASA is to inform Americans of the economic and social costs of substance abuse and its impact on their lives; assess what works in prevention, treatment, and law enforcement; encourage every individual and institution to take responsibility to combat substance abuse and addiction; provide those on the front lines with the tools they need to succeed; and remove the stigma of abuse and replace shame and despair with hope.

National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network - To date, the efficacy of new treatments for drug addiction has been demonstrated primarily in specialized research settings, with somewhat restricted patient populations. To address this problem, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has established the National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network (CTN). The mission of the CTN is twofold: Conduct studies of behavioral, pharmacological, and integrated behavioral and pharmacological treatment interventions of therapeutic effect in rigorous, multisite clinical trials to determine effectiveness across a broad range of community-based treatment settings and diversified patient populations; and transfer the research results to physicians, providers, and their patients to improve the quality of drug abuse treatment throughout the country using science as the vehicle.
