The National
Institute on Drug Abuse has provided funding for a total
of seven research centers to build research infrastructure
within schools of social work. In addition to the funding
provided to JASARC, the other six funded centers include:
Addictions
Research Institute
Center for Social Work Research
School of Social Work
University of Texas at Austin
Austin, Texas 78712-1203

upon substance abuse among underserved populations (particularly
African-Americans and Mexican-Americans) and emphasizes factors
at the individual, family, organizational, societal, and cultural
level that influence substance abuse and substance abuse treatment.

Center
for Intervention & Prevention Research on HIV & Drug
Abuse
Columbia University School of Social Work
1255 Amsterdam Avenue
New York, NY 10027
Focus: The Center's mission is to advance
intervention and prevention research on HIV/AIDS and drug
abuse by training the next cadre of social work researchers
in the development, testing, and dissemination of empirically-validated
intervention and prevention approaches that address contemporary
social problems.

Center
on Substance Abuse and Mental Illness
Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences
Case Western Reserve University
10900 Euclid Avenue
Cleveland, Ohio 44106-7167

team addresses the facilitators and barriers to treatment
among individuals with co-occurring substance use and mental
health disorders (dual disorders). Three pilot studies funded
by NIDA investigate stages of change, social networks, and
family caregiving in low-income women with dual diagnoses.

Child
Welfare, Drug Abuse and Intergenerational Risk Research Center
School of Social Welfare
University at Albany
State University of New York
Albany, New York
Focus: The focus of the Center
is on the design, development, and delivery of coordinated,
evidence-based services for families in the child welfare
system with drug abuse and co-existing problems, especially
HIV/AIDS. The ultimate goal is to improve services for vulnerable
families and children in the child welfare system, especially
those affected by substance abuse and HIV/AIDS, in order to
reduce the chance of intergenerational continuity of these
multiple interrelated problems.

evaluation of addictions prevention and treatment programs
in underserved populations with comorbid mental health and
HIV risk problems; 3) The costs and burdens of addictions
and comorbidity services from different sectors (alcohol and
drug, mental health, primary case, social services, juvenile
justice education, and informal) and their relationships to
