Donor Spotlight: The Gabe W. Miller Memorial Foundation

A new donor to the college this academic year is The Gabe W. Miller Memorial Foundation. This foundation is named in memory for Gabe W. Miller, a Highland Park, IL native who was pursuing his Master of Social Work degree at University of Denver’s Graduate School of Social Work at the time of his death in January 2005, at the age of 24. The goal of the foundation, according to Gabe’s parents, Alan and Judy, is to “continue and, indeed, expand upon Gabe’s vision of serving the disabled, disadvantaged and dispirited members of our society,” by giving both financial assistance and encouragement to the professionals-in-training who strive to serve these populations on a daily and very personal level.

The Jane Addams College of Social Work student chosen to receive the 12th Gabe W. Miller Memorial Foundation Scholarship is Ms. Ananda Leinartas. While a graduate social work student, Ms. Leinartas has worked full time as a Crisis Triage Worker at a community mental health center. After she graduates in May 2010, Ms. Leinartas is planning on using her social work education to advocate for and work with those who are chronically mentally ill.

Financial support from alumni and friends has become an increasingly important factor in maintaining the tradition of excellence at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Jane Addams College of Social Work. Currently, less than one third of the university's operating budget is derived from state-appropriated funds. 

Most alumni and friends participate in the Jane Addams College of Social Work Annual Fund with gifts of cash. To further tailor your contribution, you can specify how your gift will be used so that it supports what you care about most. Gifts of cash can be made by sending a check payable to the University of Illinois Foundation/JACSW with the fund name in the memo line.
