Jane Addams Book Awards Comes Home to Hull-House

For the first time, the annual Jane Addams Children's Book Awards will be announced at the scene of Addams' lifelong work -- the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum at the University of Illinois at Chicago . The awards will be announced at a press conference held in the Residents' Dining Hall building of the Museum ( 800 S. Halsted St. ) on April 27 at a 10:30 AM. The Jane Addams Peace Association, which has presented the award since 1953, is the educational arm of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, founded on April 28 th in 1915 with Addams as its first president.

Lisa Yun Lee, the museum Director explained why she is so thrilled to host the press conference. "We plan to reconnect actively with the legacy groups of the Hull-House Settlement and the issues most important to Jane Addams --   citizenship for immigrants, labor rights, equality for women, and especially peace, with an end to militarism. The Jane Addams Book Award is one of the most endearing and important legacies of Jane Addams.”

"History tends to overlook the critical role of youth at Hull-House and in our society.  We're putting that at the top of our agenda through art and literature that unleashes the radical imagination of youth, because the next generation will need vision to create a better society."

Publishers are authorized to place silver seals on the jackets of the award-winning books. The author receives a certificate and cash honorarium.

The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum at 800 S. Halsted St. is a part of UIC's College of Architecture and the Arts.
