Biomechanics Seminar Series

Topic: Biomechanics of the Digit
Speaker: Dr. Mark Gonzalez
Location: Biomechanics Research Lab 1032 ERF- 842 West Taylor St.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Abstract:
The human digit is a complex mechanism that has an amazing array of functions. Mechanically three bodies articulating in series are inherently unstable. Bony and ligamentous architecture in concert with force couples of several tendon systems impart stability to the digit while permitting fine control. The joint flexion-excursion is introduced through the basic principle of forces and joint kinematics. The decoupling of the force is expressed as function of the moment arm, its direction and magnitude in the presence of a constraining element called the pulley.
To understand the function of the digit an understanding of basic Newtonian mechanics, bone ligament and tendon anatomy and physiology of tendon and cartilage is necessary. To this end, these topics will be reviewed and then synthesized so that the reader may develop a more complete understanding of the function of the digit. The biomechanical principles will be applied to pathologic conditions that cause digital dysfunction and deformity.
