Clinical Research Feasibility Funding (CReFF) program (2003-2004)
GCRC (General Clinical Research Center)
Applications accepted until December 22, 2003.

The Clinical Research Feasibility Funding (CReFF) awards program is a means for the UIC GCRC to help investigators initiate careers in clinical research. The following describes the program and who is eligible to apply:

a) Junior faculty (rank no higher than assistant professor), or senior faculty who are changing career paths toward patient-oriented research, and who have a Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC)-approved protocol or a protocol under review (submitted no later than December 22, 2003) are eligible for consideration.
b) To apply, complete a Request for Clinical Research Feasibility Funds, in the form of a letter addressed to the GCRC Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), including a description of how the funds would be used to initiate or pilot their protocol. For those who have been approved by the GCRC Advisory Committee (SAC), the letter must be accompanied by 20 copies of the approved protocol in its final form (the request for GCRC resources, the Data and Safety Monitoring Plan, and the IRB application need not be submitted again). Others must have a complete application under review.
c) The SAC will prioritize the applications. In its consideration of applicants, it will evaluate the scientific merit of the proposal and the following priorities:

Level 1: Has submitted or plans to submit an application to NCRR for a K-award (K-23); has an NCRR sponsored K-23 award and needs funds to prepare an R01 application, or participates in an NCRR supported K-program (K-30).
Level 2: Has submitted or plans to submit a K-award application (A K-23 or other K-type award with a patient-oriented research component); has such an award and needs funds to prepare an R01 application, or participates in a K-program not through the NCRR, where the investigator will use the GCRC for the research
Level 3 : Other eligible faculty who have SAC-approved protocols.
d) Maximum funding for each awardee will be $10,000 annually.
e) Each awardee will have a CReFF-specific account established in their college, with direct oversight by GCRC administration. The awardee of the CReFF will be authorized to approve expenditures on this account in the specific ways described in the award letter. The awardee will be required to provide periodic financial reports and an annual progress report to the SAC.
