Clinical
Research Feasibility Funding (CReFF) program (2003-2004)
GCRC (General Clinical Research Center)

The Clinical Research Feasibility Funding (CReFF) awards
program is a means for the UIC GCRC to help investigators
initiate careers in clinical research. The following
describes the program and who is eligible to apply:
| a) |
Junior faculty (rank no higher than
assistant professor), or senior faculty who are
changing career paths toward patient-oriented research,
and who have a Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC)-approved
protocol or a protocol under review (submitted no
later than December 22, 2003) are eligible for consideration.

| b) |
To apply, complete a Request for Clinical Research
Feasibility Funds, in the form of a letter addressed
to the GCRC Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC),
including a description of how the funds would be
used to initiate or pilot their protocol. For those
who have been approved by the GCRC Advisory Committee
(SAC), the letter must be accompanied by 20 copies
of the approved protocol in its final form (the
request for GCRC resources, the Data and Safety
Monitoring Plan, and the IRB application need not
be submitted again). Others must have a complete
application under review. |
| c) |
The SAC will prioritize the applications. In
its consideration of applicants, it will evaluate
the scientific merit of the proposal and the following
priorities: |

| Level
1: |
Has submitted or plans to submit
an application to NCRR for a K-award (K-23);
has an NCRR sponsored K-23 award and needs
funds to prepare an R01 application, or participates
in an NCRR supported K-program (K-30). |
| Level 2: |
Has submitted or plans to submit a K-award
application (A K-23 or other K-type award
with a patient-oriented research component);
has such an award and needs funds to prepare
an R01 application, or participates in a K-program
not through the NCRR, where the investigator
will use the GCRC for the research |
| Level 3 |
: Other eligible faculty who have SAC-approved
protocols. |

| d) |
Maximum funding for each awardee will be $10,000
annually. |
| e) |
Each awardee will have a CReFF-specific account
established in their college, with direct oversight
by GCRC administration. The awardee of the CReFF
will be authorized to approve expenditures on this
account in the specific ways described in the award
letter. The awardee will be required to provide
periodic financial reports and an annual progress
report to the SAC. |
