On April 11th 2006, the Chicago Regional Chapter-ASM International organized a student poster contest in which Mr. Steven Shilling, undergraduate student researcher from the JSAMRL, won the first prize in the Undergraduate Category with the poster entitled Surface Modification of 6061-T6 Aluminum Alloy Using Friction Stir Processing Techniques. In addition , PhD candidates from the JSAMRL; F. Rumiche, O.A. Quintana and K. Maung, participated with the posters Electromagnetic Sensors for Microstructure Characterization and Evaluation of Environmental Degradation in Steels, Joining Yttria to 444SS in-situ alloying in a Ni/Ti Filler Metal for SOFC applications, and Ultra Fine Grain Aluminum-Matrix Composite Reinforced with Carbon Nanotubes; respectively.

During October 15-19 of this year, the Materials Science & Technology Conference and Exhibition is going to take place in Cincinnati, OH. Professor J.E Indacochea, A. Polar, F. Rumiche and K. Taylor from the JSAMRL; C.T. Snyder, L.E. Putty, J. Figueroa, A.S. Hebden, L.A. Barnes and L. Leibowitz from Argonne National Laboratory; and S.M. McDeavitt from Texas A&M University will participate with the paper entitled Corrosion Study of Selected Nickel-based Alloys in a High Temperature Oxidizing Molten Salt Electrolyte.

The FABTECH International & AWS Welding Show is North America's largest metal forming, fabricating, and welding exposition and conference. Professor J.E. Indacochea will present the paper entitled Metallurgical Evaluation of Friction Stir Welded Copper which was co-authored with A. Polar, visiting Research Scholar from the JSAMRL.

Professor J.E. Indacochea attended the International Workshop on Designing of Interfacial Structures in Advanced Materials and their Joints-DIS'06. The paper entitled was: Interface Development in Joining Yttria Stabilized Zirconia to Stainless Steel by in-situ Alloying with Ni/Ti Filler Metals. In addition, professor Indacochea was part of the International Scientific Advisory Board in this Workshop.

The second International Conference on Welding and Joining of Materials ICWJM 2007 is going to take place in the archeological capital of America, Cusco - Peru. Profesor J.E. Indacochea is co-orginizer of this conference and will participate with the paper entitled Joining YSZ to Crofer-22APU by in-situ Alloying in a Ni-Ti Filler Metal for SOFC Applications, which is co-authored with O.A. Quintana and A. Polar.
