RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Current Position:

Professor of Chemistry - University of Illinois at Chicago- 1985 - present

1997-98 - Acting Head, Department of Chemistry
Associate Professor - University of Illinois at Chicago - 1981-85
Assistant Professor - University of Illinois at Chicago Circle - 1976-81
Experimental and theoretical research in spectroscopy applied to molecular structure problems. Major emphasis has been on the development of the vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) technique with applications including theoretically oriented, small molecule structural studies and empirically based peptide, protein and nucleic acid conformational studies. The protein studies have involved development of novel statistically based methods for secondary structure prediction from spectra. Other research interests include magnetic VCD or molecular Zeeman spectra and its theoretical simulation, protein folding studies with a wide variety of spectral techniques, and nmr structural studes of peptides. Previous work in the group included ligand field spectral studies of transition metal complexes in low temperature crystals using electronic MCD, absorption spectra, and two photon induced fluorescence and in a molecular beam using MPI.
