With equal parts pride and humility, I am pleased to present to you the first special awards edition of e-AtLAS, the electronic newsletter of the UIC College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. As I peruse the myriad awards and accolades that our faculty, students, alumni and staff have earned this past academic year, I cannot help but feel great pride at our collective accomplishment. This pride, though, is followed fast by a strong dose of humility; working within and on behalf of such a talented community is an privilege and responsibility I take very seriously. READ ON

Research and Grant Awards

Did you know that in the last academic year, LAS faculty members were awarded over $59 million dollars in external grants and awards? Their projects represent the broad spectrum that is the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, with projects to help improve mathematics education for teenagers, to study what contributes to “good policing” across the U.S., and to understand labor movements in the modern world. Awards, Elections and Appointments

From honorary doctorates, and lofty college rankings to Fulbright Awards for teaching seminars, LAS professors have proven themselves to be model ambassadors for the college and for UIC. In addition, many have been elected to leadership roles in the national societies for their disciplines, including the Goethe Society of North America, the Illinois Humanities Council Board of Directors and the American Philosophical Association. Book and Paper Awards and Publications

LAS faculty members published over 15 books in the last year, ranging from popular fiction to highly acclaimed monographs. If you would like to understand the global economic crisis, brush up on the history of obsession or consider the importance of writing well in the college setting, an LAS faculty author can point the way. Internal Awards

UIC and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences honor outstanding faculty members with teaching awards, research fellowships and more. While some honors are meant to acknowledge the career-long contributions of the college’s outstanding faculty, others are designed to support faculty in immediate and meaningful research that benefits not only the campus community but also has real and positive impact on the larger world. External Scholarships and Fellowships

From Rotary and Fulbright Fellowships to grants from the National Science and Ford Foundations, LAS students—undergraduate and graduate—have earned high accolades for their academic pursuits. The dozens of awards that our students have earned this past year promise to broaden their horizons by immersing them in hands-on research, and taking them to Sweden, Morocco, Peru and other destinations literally and figuratively beyond East Campus. From collections of poetry to research on social and emotional learning and the intersection of Islam and Christianity, LAS students earned accolades this past year for the papers and books they have written. READ ON

Barbara Schaal Barbara Schaal

LAS alumni go on to do great things. This year, LAS celebrated their many world-class successes, from a Distinguished Teaching Award from the Mathematical Association of America, to NSF CAREER awards, to the 2008 Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa. From the University of Illinois Board of Trustees to President Obama’s National Science Advisory Council, our alumni have also been appointed to prestigious and vital committees and councils.
