Awards, Elections and Appointments

Anthropology

Gayatri Reddy, associate professor of anthropology and gender and women’s studies, was elected to the Executive Committee of the American Institute for Indian Studies.

Chemistry

Luke Hanley, professor in the department of chemistry, was named a Fellow of the American Vacuum Society.

Criminology, Law and Justice

In March 2009, U.S. News ranked the criminology program twentieth in the country.

Paul Schewe, currently an assistant professor of criminology, law and justice and an associate research professor in the department of psychology, was awarded the Moxie Award by the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault in May 2008.

Peter Doran

Earth and Environmental Sciences

Jean Bogner, research professor in the department of earth and environmental sciences, was named a Lawrence Lecturer for 2008 by the Solid Waste Association of North America. She was also the keynote speaker for their Landfill Gas Conference in March 2009.

Peter Doran, professor of earth and environmental sciences, was named a Kavli Fellow by the National Academy of Sciences in July 2008.

Economics

Barry Chiswick

On May 29, 2009, Barry Chiswick, distinguished professor of economics, was awarded an honorary doctor of philosophy degree by the School of Economics and Management at Lund University, Sweden. “Barry R. Chiswick has been an important source of inspiration to the research on economic immigration integration at Lund University, both through his research achievements and through his visits to the School of Economics and Management over the years," Lund University said in a statement used in the graduation program.

Germanic Studies

Astrida Orle Tantillo, associate professor and visiting associate dean for literatures, cultural studies, and lingustics, was elected vice president of the Goethe Society of North America. She will serve until December 31, 2009, and then serve a three-year term as president.


Latin American and Latino Studies

Maria de los Angeles Torres

Maria de los Angeles Torres, professor and director of Latin American and Latino studies, was elected to the Illinois Humanities Council Board of Directors.

Philosophy

In August 2008, Sally Sedgwick, professor in the department of philosophy, was elected vice president of the Central Division of the American Philosophical Association and is president-elect for 2010.

Physics

Juan Carlos Campuzano, professor of physics, received a Distinguished Alumnus Award at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on May 17, 2008.

Psychology

In June 2009, Cynthia Coleman, coordinator of research programs in the department of psychology, was named president of the Chesterfield Community Council.

James W. Pellegrino

James W. Pellegrino, LAS distinguished professor of psychology and education, has been appointed to two very important national panels related to educational technology. The first is a National Academy of Science and National Research Council Study Committee on Learning Science: Computer Games, Simulations, and Education. The Committee's directive is to explore the connections between what is known about science learning, computer gaming and simulations, the role computer gaming and simulations could play in assessing learning and the pathways by which they could be used on a large scale. The second is the National Educational Technology Panel. He has been invited to serve as a member of the Technical Work Group (TWG) chaired by Mike Smith and Jim Shelton of the U.S. Department of Education.

Slavic and Baltic Languages and Literatures

Giedrius Subacius, professor of Slavic and Baltic languages and literatures, will be honored this fall by the Republic of Lithuania's Ministry of Education for his active role in promoting Lithuanian culture and studies and his achievements in related humanities and social science research. Subacius, a linguist and a senior research fellow at the Institute of the Lithuanian Language, will receive the $6,000 award this fall during a special ceremony in Vilnius, where he will present a public lecture covering his research over the last decade.

Sociology

In June 2009, Anthony Orum, professor of sociology, was named the winner of the Robert and Helen Lynd Award for Lifetime Achievement and Service from the Community and Urban Sociology section of the American Sociological Association. The award recognizes those who have had distinguished career achievements in community and urban sociology.
