Andrew Farkas’s book Self-Titled Debut won the 2009 Subito Press Book Competition. The prize is publication, copies of the book and a reading at the University of Colorado. A collection of short, innovative fictions, Self-Titled Debut includes works of parody, pastiche, surrealism and irrealism, all held together by humor.
Garrett Brown won the 2009 Liam Rector First Book Prize for his collection of poems, Manna Sifting. Of Brown's winning collection, final judge E. Ethelbert Miller wrote: "This collection is a poetry museum with wonderful things on display, showcasing images that linger with the reader; see the last lines of ‘In The Stories We Tell.’ From John Cage to speaking Japanese, these are resonant well-crafted poems that embrace quality and excellence.”
Katarzyna Kowalczyk won the Austrian Consulate General Graduate Essay Scholarship for her paper, “Revolution als Dämonieerscheinung in dem Roman Die Dämonen von Heimito von Doderer.”
Max Deardorff won the prize for best paper by a graduate student at the Missouri Valley History Conference with, “They met on the Mediterranean: How the Intersection of Islam and Christianity Arrived at the New World, 1492-1713.”
Allison Dymnicki was the winner of the Graduate Student Award for Excellence in Social and Emotional Learning Research for writing the highest rated research paper submitted to the 2009 American Educational Research Association conference. She was selected to participate in the week-long Summer Youth Violence Institute sponsored by University of California, Berkeley and University of California, Riverside. She was selected out of pool of 60 applicants and received a $1,000 scholarship to attend.
Leah H. Rubin was awarded first place ($300) for research entitled, “Effects of estrogen and oxytocin on symptoms and social cognition in schizophrenia” in the category for Humanities/Social Sciences/Business Practices at the University of Illinois Graduate Student Research Forum.
For her paper “Between the Two: Determinants of Bisexual Identity Among African Americans,” Loren Henderson was awarded the Best Graduate Student Paper Award by the Association of Black Sociologists.
