“To have an impact on a disease like melanoma has changed my life. Research is a way to make progress and I want students to learn about and engage in it,” said Dr. Howard Kaufman, who has helped the new LAS Undergraduate Research Initiative become an immediate success. READ ON
Gretchen Winter is a loyal supporter and active participant in the College, a member of the Presidents Council, a University of Illinois Foundation member, and since 2001, a founding member of the LAS Board of Visitors. Winter was enthusiastic to have this opportunity to share her passion for LAS. READ ON
“My research will help determine which bats are responsible for seed dispersal in deforested areas,” said Carrie Seltzer, a second year graduate student in biological sciences, and recipient of a 2008 Bodmer Travel Award. “This award made it possible for me to travel to East Africa to begin my study of fruit bat ecology.” Thanks to an NSF grant she earned this year, Seltzer has returned to Tanzania to further her field work. “I hope to capture people's voices and package it in a way that people that work with communities of color can use it as a tool,” said Akilah Watkins-Butler. “I want to devote scholarship in a way that everyday folks can use it and learn.” READ ON READ ON
Here you will find various LAS funds that have been established over the course of the last six months. Whether they involve student award money, research funding or equipment purchases, all of these funds have one thing in common—they improve the quality of education in LAS. READ ON
