Our program fosters a critical understanding of contemporary issues through the interdisciplinary study of Asian American histories and experiences.

Asian American Studies at UIC


Asian American Studies examines the histories, experiences, and cultures of Asians in the Americas, including East Asians, South Asians and Southeast Asians. It is an interdisciplinary field of study that has made significant research contributions in the areas of immigration and social history, theories of race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality studies, literary and cultural studies, public policy, labor and law.

Studies.

Asian and Asian-American culture, institutions, and organization; immigration, population, settlement patterns, occupations and poverty; family and ethnic identification; inequality and politics; values, prejudice, discrimination.

ASAM 263: Asian American Gender and Sexual Diversity
Introductory, cross-disciplinary examination of issues related to gender and sexuality among Asian Americans, with critical attention paid to diverse experiences across various
social and political contexts.

ASAM 290: Special Topics in Asian American Studies
Cultural politics of Asian American Food.

Using food as a storyteller to capture the heterogeneity and depth of Asian American's lived experiences, this interdisciplinary course explores the production and representation of Asian American identities and commuities through food.

ASAM 441: Topics in Asian American Literature and Culture. An advanced seminar that will examine the complex formal strategies and cultural politics of Asian American literary texts. Some familiarity with Asian American literature is helpful but not required.

ASAM 458: Asian America and Transnational Feminism. This advanced and interdisciplinary course examines the relationship between various forms of feminism and Asian America in the context of issues pertaining to labor, migration, imperialism, citizenship, and movement building.
