Classics Club
The Classics Club is an organization of UIC students who want to cultivate and share their interest in Classics outside the classroom. Members need not be majors or minors in the Department of Classics and Mediterranean Studies, though many current members are. Activities may be as informal as an afternoon movie, or may involve travel to one of Chicago’s many cultural and educational offerings.
Some highlights of the club’s recent activities include: a visit to the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago, expertly led by our own Professor Nanno Marinatos; a viewing of the comedy classic A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, with commentary by Professor Allan Kershaw; a trip to the Art Institute of Chicago to view the collection of antiquities and other art exhibits; an outing to the Lincoln Park Zoo to observe ape behavior, made in conjunction with a course on animal sacrifice in antiquity. Previously, the club has organized a series of student presentations on various areas of research and interest: The Pharaoh Akhenaten, classical influences in T.S. Eliot, Republican Rome’s treatment of illicit religious cult. Club members have also attended numerous talks in the Chicago area by leading scholars.
New members are always welcome to join our activities. Interested students should contact the Classics Club’s President, Sebastian Anderson, at aander3@uic.edu for an up-to-date calendar of events.
