The Apology of Socrates
Yannis Simonides plays Socrates

The Apology of Socrates is a play based closely on the Apology by Plato, Socrates' student. The setting is Socrates' trial in Athens, 399 BC, in which he is accused for his religious beliefs, political dissent, and activities of skeptical inquiry. Here, Socrates defends not only his person but his principles. He argues that man's primary concern in life is to do good, pursuing virtue and wisdom, thereby benefiting the individual and the city.
The Apology confronts issues most familiar to a modern audience: the role of an individual in society, free speech, and civic virtue. This performance is an excellent example of the richness of the cultures of antiquity.
The Department of Classics and Mediterranean Studies at UIC is hosting this event in order to raise awareness about the continuing relevance of studying Classics today.
