The LAS programs in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences enhance
the educational quality and depth of all undergraduate colleges on campus. There
are 21 departments and programs in LAS, offering over 60 undergraduate major
fields of specialization, 40 minors, about 70 graduate degrees at the masters
and doctoral levels, and almost 1,100 courses. Students from all undergraduate
colleges and many graduate programs enroll in LAS courses.
By emphasizing breadth of education rather than professional or vocational
training, a liberal arts degree provides students with the intellectual tools
to create new ideas and to think independently. Whatever the long-term goals
or career plans, a liberal arts education provides an excellent foundation for
understanding, and becoming contributing members of the complex and
evolving world
in which we live.
LAS is the largest of the colleges at UIC with its faculty and staff committed
to helping students reach their educational goals. An LAS degree will reflect
the educational stature and distinction of UIC and the College of Liberal Arts
and Sciences. |
