LAS Web Identity Standards (Version 3.0)
Please include the following images and features on your LAS department or program home page. Note, also, note that the LAS home page follows each one of these guidelines, and is a good reference for how to handle each item. If you discover that your web administrator requires assistance, or that no official logo file set currently exists for your LAS entity, please contact Michael Vollmer.
1. Please add the official LAS or departmental logo and link the logo to the LAS home page (http://www.las.uic.edu).
Per UIC and LAS web standards, this logo should appear at the top of each web page in your site. Please bear in mind that can be used in conjunction with a pre-existing masthead, as it does, for instance, on the Mathematics Department and English Department sites. The logo itself does not have to act as a masthead.
Please note that although the logo on the Mathematics site appears in red and blue, UIC standards also allow for this logo to appear in black, as on the English site, or in white, as it does on the LAS site.
If you would like the logo to link to both the UIC and LAS home pages, feel free to use the LAS Logo Image Files that we have "sliced" with HTML links for each.
2. Please install the Brilliant Futures logo and link to http://brilliantfutures.uic.edu in a place on your home page where it will be immediately visible upon first loading. Place the LAS Make a Gift button nearby, and link it to http://connect.las.uic.edu/gift/las.shtml/, if your department does not have a page devoted to donor giving. The LAS online gift form which has options for directing gifts to specific departments. The logo and button do not have to appear in the home page header. You may use one of three design sets available in the LAS Logo Image Files.
3. In the footer of every page, please provide the following, with abbreviated hypertext menus and links where appropriate:
- UIC home page at http://www.uic.edu
- LAS home page at http://www.las.uic.edu
- Department home page (a Department Site Map earns extra credit and Google traffic)
- Department mailing address
- Department contact person
- Department web person
4. Be sure that your departmental website complies with UIC’s and the State of Illinois’ mandates on web accessibility. To learn more about what steps to take, visit the UIC Accessibility Standards Website. UIC expects that all departmental and program web sites created and launched after August 20, 2008 will be 100% compliant with these standards.
5. LAS would like to see its departments adopt a consistent style for its URLs. They should mirror LAS’s primary web address: www.las.uic.edu, e.g. www.departmentname.uic.edu. To do this, many departments will need to ask for assistance from the ACCC in creating a domain alias address. For information on why the use of .org is inappropriate for all UIC websites, visit the ACCC’s page on UIC Internet Domain Name Policies.
6. A FEW WORDS ABOUT COLOR: Please avoid use of low contrast text -background color combinations.
Deep blue on a dark grey or black background is nearly invisible.
Yellow on white lacks contrast and so is also difficult to read.
High contrast color combinations are much easier to read.
Text on dark background colors often needs a bold or larger font in a light color.
EXTRA CREDIT:
Use of "breadcrumbs" navigation at the top of page allows visitors to retrace their steps. Unlike the "breadcrumbs" shown at the top of this page, each term should be an active hyperlink allowing easy return to previously visited pages.
