The Humanities Laboratory First-Book Series
with the University of Illinois Press
In Fall 2002, the Humanities Laboratory began sponsoring a maximum of three
"first books" a year for the next three to five years to be published at the
University of Illinois Press.
To be considered for selection you should present precisely the same materials as if
you were submitting your project to any academic press. You will need to send the following:
- A LETTER OF INQUIRY
- A BOOK PROPOSAL
- A SAMPLE CHAPTER
- A CV
We will read and critique these materials and will select a small number of projects
for which we will request the complete manuscript. If we request your manuscript you
will have to grant us sole consideration through the entire process from our internal
evaluation through the evaluation process of the University of Illinois Press.
You will not be able to submit your manuscript during this process to any other press.
The internal evaluation will result in three manuscripts annually being submitted in
the Humanities Laboratory First-Book Series at the University of Illinois Press. There they will
undergo the same process of evaluation as ALL solicited manuscripts. The
Humanities Laboratory will award successful manuscripts a publication subvention to
facilitate their publication.
Submit your initial materials for consideration to the Associate Director of the Humanities Laboratory:
