Each year the Humanities Laboratory will provide a small number of
seed grants to UIC faculty to help them prepare research proposals for
larger grant competitions. These seed grants will range from $500 to $3000.
The funds will be distributed to the awardees after July 1, 2004 and must be
expended by June 30, 2005. Seed grants are intended to provide time, materials,
and / or resources to scholars to help them draft more complex grants. The seed
grants as well as the larger grants that may later be awarded to these projects,
should reflect the philosophy of the Humanities Laboratory:
They must have a strongly humanistic aspect, drawing on one or more of the
traditional humanities disciplines.
They must be collaborative and include at least two (2) faculty members.
They may be interdisciplinary, transdiscipilinary, or disciplinary.
They can include faculty from UIC as well as from other institutions.
They should be aimed at disseminating knowledge for a broader public
audience than the traditional scholarly monograph. (They could be films,
exhibitions, web sites, TV or radio pilots, books aimed at a general audience,
web based projects, community outreach projects.)
Applications for seed grants for 2004 should be no longer than two (2) pages:
It should outline the general intent of the collaborative project; the individuals
involved and their fields of expertise; and it should outline how the funds requested
would be expended. The application must bear the endorsement of the chairperson of the
appropriate department(s).
Applications for the first stage of seed grants for 2004 are due by March 1, 2004.
Any questions about the grants should be directed by e-mail to Dawn Marlan, Associate
