LAS Distinguished Professors for 2012
The 2012 recipients of the Liberal Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor award are Vladimir Gevorgyan, a professor in the department of chemistry, and David Marker, professor of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. The LAS Distinguished Professor award is granted to exceptional faculty for their contributions to the LAS and UIC communities, and for significant and sustained intellectual accomplishments in their chosen fields.
Students recognized by the Goldwater Foundation
The Goldwater Foundation, an organization dedicated to funding the education of future scientists, mathematicians and engineers, has recognized Wenji Guo and Daniel Wang, both majors in biological sciences, this year from UIC. Wenji Guo, a junior, was named a 2012 Goldwater Scholar, while Daniel Wang, also a junior, received a 2012 Goldwater Scholar Honorable Mention.

Message from Astrida Orle Tantillo, Interim Dean
In the last several months, I have had many opportunities to speak with our alumni. I frequently ask them how they believe they have benefitted from their education at UIC. A definite pattern has emerged in these conversations: our alumni tell me how much has changed in the “real world” since they have left college and how much their particular majors, as well as their overall background in the liberal arts, have benefitted them.

About LAS
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers programs in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences that enhance the educational quality and depth of all undergraduate colleges on campus. The largest of the colleges at UIC, LAS houses 22 departments and programs. They offer over 40 undergraduate major fields of specialization, 40 minors, about 50 graduate degrees at the masters and doctoral levels, and almost 1,000 courses. Students from all undergraduate colleges and many graduate programs enroll in LAS courses. Over 350 tenure track faculty teach the college's 9,300 undergraduate and 1,200 graduate students.
