Sociologists Examine Immigration
University of Illinois at Chicago sociologists have received a $420,000 National Science Foundation grant to study how local communities respond to the issue of immigration. "We're interested in addressing how some communities come to be fairly welcoming to immigrants, how some communities build institutional barriers against immigrants and how some take it as it comes," said Pamela Popielarz, associate professor of sociology and one of the study's principal investigators. "Evening with LAS" Photos
On October 15, 2009, the UIC College of Liberal Arts and Sciences hosted "Evening with LAS" in New York City. The evening brought together LAS alumni from New York City and its surrounding area to share college news, establish camaraderie among alumni in the area and bring an LAS presence to the Big Apple. E-AtLAS Awards 2008-2009 now online
The UIC College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has released its first e-AtLAS Awards issue detailing the awards won by LAS faculty, students, staff and alumni in the 2008-2009 academic year. During this time, LAS faculty were awarded over $59 million in external grants, while LAS students travelled all over the world using scholarships and fellowships and staff and alumni were granted awards for their work, studies and service to their communities. About LAS
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers programs in the
humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences that enhance
the educational quality and depth of all undergraduate colleges on
campus. The largest of the colleges at UIC, LAS houses 22
departments and programs. They offer over 60 undergraduate major fields
of specialization, 40 minors, about 50 graduate
degrees at the masters and doctoral levels, and almost 1,100 courses.
Students from all undergraduate colleges and many
graduate programs enroll in LAS courses. Over 360 tenure track faculty
teach the college’s 9,400 undergraduate and
1,300 graduate students.
