LAS seeks students seeking scholarships
Each year LAS awards numerous competitive scholarships to students in good academic standing, in LAS or at UIC, in majors from A to Z.

Nenciu receives NSF Career Award
Irina Nenciu, an assistant professor in the department of mathematics, statistics, and computer science was recently the recipient of the prestigious NSF Career Award. This award is given in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.
Physics lab receives state-of-the-art SEM
Physics assistant professor Robert Klie and his lab recently became the caretakers of a new state-of-the-art scanning electron microscope, said to be the most powerful of its kind in the nation. The dedication for the machine was held on January 20th at the Research Resources Center in SES on UIC's East Campus. READ ON

In the last several months, I have had many opportunities to speak with our alumni. I frequently ask them how they believe they have benefitted from their education at UIC. A definite pattern has emerged in these conversations: our alumni tell me how much has changed in the “real world” since they have left college and how much their particular majors, as well as their overall background in the liberal arts, have benefitted them.

About LAS
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers programs in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences that enhance the educational quality and depth of all undergraduate colleges on campus. The largest of the colleges at UIC, LAS houses 22 departments and programs. They offer over 40 undergraduate major fields of specialization, 40 minors, about 50 graduate degrees at the masters and doctoral levels, and almost 1,000 courses. Students from all undergraduate colleges and many graduate programs enroll in LAS courses. Over 350 tenure track faculty teach the college's 9,300 undergraduate and 1,200 graduate students.
