July 17-18, 2004
"Beyond Klezmer: The Legacy of Eastern European Jewry Today." Jewish Studies sponsored a small, public conference at Schloss Elmau with twelve internationally known specialists in the field. From UIC, Dr. Sander Gilman and Dr. Elizabeth Loentz presented papers.

September 2003
The Jewish Studies Program, the Humanities Laboratory, and the Department of Medical Education (UIC) are pleased to sponsor Dr. Xun Zhou (Fellow, School or Oriental and African Studies, London) for a two week visit. Dr. Zhou is a historian of Modern China. Specifically, she is well known for her acclaimed work on Jews in China and on patterns of addiction and smoking in China. She co-edited a book with Sander Gilman, A Cultural History of Smoking, due out next year by Reaktion Press.

October 16 - November 20, 2003
Lecture Series: Einstein in Chicago
    In the fall of 2003, the most comprehensive exhibition ever presented on the life and theories of Albert Einstein will travel to Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History. This exhibit presents an opportunity for the entire city to engage in questions of science, religion, politics, and ethics that the figure of Einstein raises like no other. Both the Humanities Laboratory and the Jewish Studies Program at University Illinois, Chicago are collaborating with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Crown Family Center for Jewish Studies at Northwestern University, the Goethe Institut-Chicago, the Consulate General of Switzerland, the German Academic Exchange Service (NY), and the Illinois Institute of Technology to present this series of free, public lectures.
