The Jewish Studies Minor
Why the Jewish Studies Minor is a good choice for any student:
The Jewish Studies program is committed to furthering knowledge and
understanding of fundamental questions and issues of Jewish life, history,
and identity. Jewish Studies is an exciting interdisciplinary field of inquiry.
Jewish Studies includes the study of texts such as the Bible, international
literature, films in all major languages, and Jewish languages such as
Hebrew and Yiddish. Jewish Studies at UIC focuses on the social and
cultural experience of Jews as a diasporic people. The program encourages
participation by students at all levels of study. Jewish Studies faculty
members are prominent professors drawn from the Humanities and the
Social Sciences at UIC. The Minor in Jewish Studies offers students the
opportunity to design a program of study to fit their individual interests and
goals. Whatever your chosen field or career goal may be,
a Jewish Studies
Minor will enrich your understanding of:
- the experience and cultural expression of Jews from Biblical times to the present
- Jewish culture as an intregral part of American history and contemporary American society
- anti-Semitism and the Holocaust
Jewish Studies Minor courses will help you:
- develop critical thinking, writing and discussion skills.
- gain a reading and speaking knowledge of Jewish languages.
For the minor, a minimum of 18 semester hours in Jewish Studies, selected from a list of courses
approved by the Minor Advisor. Included in the 18 semester hours must be nine semester hours
(non-language) at the 100 level, and nine semester hours at or above the 200 level. The study of
Jewish languages is strongly encouraged but not required. Upon petition to the faculty committee,
other courses can count towards the minor.
