THE LATIN AMERICAN AND LATINO STUDIES PROGRAM
Ours is a unique multi-disciplinary program that compares and combines the study of Latin America and Latino communities in the United States.

Defining the field of Latina/o and Latin American Music

In 2006, Professor Frances Aparicio and Professor Alejandro L. Madrid joined the editorial group of the Grove Dictionary of American Music as Advisor and Senior Editor respectively upon an invitation from Charles Garrett, Editor in Chief of the encyclopedia's new, revised edition. Their task was to address the shortcomings of the dictionary's first edition (1986) and create a new and comprehensive list of entries that reflected the diversity, vibrancy, and range of the Latina/o and Latin American musical experience. Under the leadership of Professor Aparicio and Professor Madrid, the list of Latina/o and Latin American entries grew exponentially, from ca. 30 entries to more than 300 that are still being revised and edited; their foundational work for one of the world's most respected and influential music encyclopedia shows LALS at UIC as a prominent force in shaping the study of Latina/o and Latin American music in the decades to come.
