The Minor

A minor is not required to graduate from LAS, although many students choose to complete a minor to enhance their employment or professional options in today's global world.

Many students complete a minor in an area related to the individual's major or in an area in which the student has a specific interest. Students should give careful consideration to completing a minor as a way of developing their interests. This may increase their options when exploring employment or professional or graduate school opportunities.

A minimum grade point average of 2.00 (A=4.0) is required in the minor field.

The minor must include at least 9 semester hours at the advanced level, except in a foreign language, where a minimum of 6 hours is required. Of the 9 advanced hours, 6 must be in residence at UIC.

Declaring A Minor

Students should declare a minor no later than the end of the sophomore year. Transfer students admitted with junior or senior standing who did not declare a minor at the time of admission should declare a minor by the end of their first term of enrollment.

To declare a minor for the first time, or to change from one minor to another, you may either complete a request form in the LAS Student Academic Affairs Office, Room 309 University Hall, or you may do so in the offering department or at the time of declaring a major in the major department. All academic advising in the minor field is the responsibility of the department.
