Scholarships For LAS Undergraduates—With Preference Given to Financial Need
Mario V. & Edith J. Gambardella Student Award
This need-based scholarship is awarded annually to LAS undergraduates in all disciplines.
Prerequisites-
- Minimum GPA: 2.00
- All LAS disciplines
- Minimum 60 semester hours completed at UIC by end of current Spring semester.
- Applicants must be of Italian descent and in good academic standing.
Raquel M. & Alfredo Garza Scholarship
This need-based scholarship recognizing academic achievement is awarded annually to LAS undergraduates in all disciplines.
Prerequisites-
- Minimum GPA: 3.00
- All LAS disciplines
- Minimum 30 semester hours completed at UIC by end of current Spring semester.
- Applicants must be of Mexican-American descent and in good academic standing.
James A. Hagan Endowed Scholarship
This need-based scholarship recognizing academic achievement is awarded annually to LAS undergraduates in all disciplines.
Prerequisites-
- Minimum GPA: 3.00
- All LAS disciplines
- Minimum 30 semester hours completed at UIC by end of current Spring semester.
- Applicants must be in good academic standing.
Eugenia R. & Max M. Jacobson M.D. Memorial Scholarship
This need-based scholarship recognizing academic achievement is awarded annually to LAS undergraduates in all disciplines.
Prerequisites-
- Minimum GPA: 3.00
- All LAS disciplines
- Minimum 30 semester hours completed at UIC by end of current Spring semester.
- Applicants must be in good academic standing.
Adam Kuhn Scholarship
This need-based scholarship honors the memory of Adam Kuhn, who died suddenly while attending the U of I College of Medicine.
Prerequisites-
- Minimum GPA: 3.00
- Pre-Medicine in LAS
- Minimum 90 semester hours completed at UIC and entering senior year after current Spring semester.
- Full-time student in good academic standing.
- A list of medical schools applied to and an additional essay that focuses on student's reasons for pursuing a medical education are also required. Essay should identify intended field of medical practice and the reasons for choosing that medical specialty.
The Bernard Shaw Prize
This need-based scholarship is named after the distinguished journalist and CNN anchor and is awarded annually to qualified LAS undergraduates majoring in Communication or English/journalism or History. The purpose of The Bernard Shaw Prize is to recognize superior academic and civic achievement, to encourage further educational study, and to help students needing financial assistance. Recipients must demonstrate, over at least two years as a UIC student, an outstanding record of academic accomplishments, along with exemplary leadership and citizenship.
Prerequisites-
- Minimum GPA: 3.00
- Communication or English or History
- Minimum 60 semester hours completed at UIC by end of current Spring semester.
- Preference to minorities. A graded writing sample from one of applicant's UIC classes is required. Statement of personal and professional goals is required.
Eugene & Mary Tappero Scholarship
This need-based scholarship is awarded to LAS undergraduate students in all disciplines.
Prerequisites-
- Minimum GPA: 2.00
- All LAS disciplines
- Minimum 60 semester hours completed at UIC by end of current Spring semester.
- Applicants must be in good academic standing.
Dorothy Thelander Memorial Scholarship
This need-based scholarship is awarded to LAS undergraduate students who major in Spanish or French and demonstrate academic excellence.
Prerequisites-
- Minimum GPA: 2.00
- Preference to Spanish or French
- Applicants must be in good academic standing.
Scholarships For LAS Undergraduates—Financial Need Not A Requirement
The PNA-Hugh Hill Scholarship
This LAS scholarship, which was established by the Polish National Alliance to honor Chicago journalist and political reporter Hugh Hill, is awarded to full-time LAS undergraduates majoring in either English or Communication.
Prerequisites-
- Minimum GPA: 3.00
- Communication or English
- Minimum 60 semester hours completed at UIC by end of current Spring semester.
- Must have a related internship in electronic and/or print media at a television or radio station, magazine, or newspaper.
The Walter & Mary Knorowski Prize
This LAS scholarship is awarded to LAS undergraduates in all disciplines.
Prerequisites-
- Minimum GPA: 2.00
- All LAS disciplines
- Applicants must be in good academic standing.
Merrill C. Kenna & Brent D. Nicholson Scholarship
This LAS scholarship, given in the names of Merrill C. Kenna (’93 Psychology, ’95 Master of Social Work) and his late life-partner Brent D. Nicholson, is awarded to African-American LAS undergraduates majoring in Gender and Women's Studies, Political Science, or Psychology.
Prerequisites-
- Minimum GPA: 2.00
- Gender and Women's Studies, Political Science, or Psychology
- Minimum 60 semester hours completed at UIC by end of current Spring semester.
- African-American students. Demonstrated commitment to bettering their neighborhood, city or country through volunteer activities.
Scholarships For LAS Undergraduate and Graduate Students—Financial Need Not A Requirement
Robert Corley Memorial Scholarship
This LAS scholarship honors the memory of Robert E. Corley, longtime associate dean for LAS Student Affairs and professor of sociology at UIC.
Prerequisites-
- Minimum GPA: 2.00
- LAS major in the Humanities or Social Sciences
- Minimum 60 semester hours completed at UIC by end of current Spring semester.
- No minimum hour requirement for graduate students. To be eligible, all students must be in good standing.
LAS Alumni Association Merit Awards (requires separate application and deadline)
This scholarship is awarded by the Liberal Arts and Sciences Alumni Association to LAS graduates and undergraduates.
Prerequisites-
- Minimum GPA: 2.00
- All disciplines
- Undergrads must have an equivalent of 75 semester hours applicable to a UIC LAS BA degree and must have completed their two most recent terms as an LAS student.
- No minimum hour requirement for graduate students. To be eligible, all students must be in good standing.
- Graduate students must have earned an undergraduate degree from UIC-LAS, must be enrolled in and in good standing with the UIC Graduate College and must be a current member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association. Applicants must submit a special narrative.
Liberal Arts & Sciences Endowed Scholarship
This LAS scholarship is awarded to LAS undergraduates and graduates in all LAS disciplines.
Prerequisites-
- Minimum GPA: 2.00
- All LAS disciplines
- Minimum 60 semester hours completed at UIC by end of current Spring semester.
- No minimum hour requirement for graduate students. To be eligible, all students must be in good standing.
Scholarships Available To All UIC Undergraduate Students—
Peter James Barbato Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to UIC undergraduates living in the community surrounding UIC, with preference given to students whose family home is in the Near West Side, Tri-Taylor, South Loop, and West Loop, and West Gate neighborhoods.
Prerequisites-
- Minimum GPA: 2.00
- All disciplines
- Minimum 15 semester hours completed at UIC by end of current Spring semester.
- Must be in good academic standing. Must reside in the community surrounding UIC with preference given to residency in the Near West Side, Tri-Taylor, South Loop, West Loop, and West Gate neighborhoods.
Jeff E. Lewis Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to UIC undergraduates who have demonstrated academic excellence and who carry a minimum grade point average of 3.5/4.0.
Prerequisites-
- Minimum GPA: 3.50
- All disciplines
- Must have demonstrated academic excellence.
Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Fund Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a UIC undergraduate who is a Vietnam veteran or the child or grandchild of a Vietnam veteran. Applicants must include a copy of the veteran’s DD214 form verifying veteranship and a copy of the applicant’s birth certificate or equivalent proof verifying relation to the veteran.

- Full-time and part-time students in good academic standing. Must be a Vietnam veteran or the child or grandchild of a Vietnam veteran.
