Services Provided by the Informatics Core End-of-Life Care and Affiliate Investigator Programs Include:
1. Consultation to help researchers access, develop, test and deploy informatics solutions that will optimize:
- subject recruitment, retention, and tracking
- instrument design
- data collection,
- data monitoring
- data storage
- data analyses (including data mining)
- database mining
2. Promotion of dialogue and collaboration across investigators to ensure informatics solutions are built in ways that ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and availability for multiple uses that will minimize redundancy and maximize the speed of research translation.
3. Training sessions to diffuse the use of informatics-based research processes into Center-facilitated research into end-of-life transitions.
4. Expansion of the compendium of biobehavioral measures appropriate for use in studies of:
- Symptoms
- Quality of life
- Quality of dying
- Environment
- Comorbidity
- Functional status
- Health perception
- Biological and physiological function
5. Support to develop a repository for data sets that are available for secondary analysis by faculty, doctoral students, and affiliate members. The collection includes data sets relevant to the following areas:
- Symptoms
- Quality of life
- Quality of dying
- Perceived health
- Functional status
- Physiological function
Example of Researcher Consultation Process:
1) Researcher contacts Gail Keenan (Director Informatics Core) to discuss needs.
2) Director assigns core team informatics faculty consultant to researcher/study
3) Researcher schedules meeting with consultant to discuss study (bring instrument/s, description of population, design, and method) and Any other resources)
4) Consultant suggests next steps to be taken by researcher (e.g., meet programmer, statistician, other)
5) Consultant and researcher/statistician meet with programmer
6) Researcher carries out related work under supervision of consultant (regular meetings).
7) Informatics core evaluation team monitors achievement of researcher Informatics goals.
