RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr Prasad's present and past research interests have been:
a. regarding tools for identification of sleepiness and related impairment in narcolepsy and OSA subjects.
b. the identification of residual breathing events during treatment of sleep apnea with a positive pressure device, utilizing the branded therapeutic device as an event detection device.
c. pharmacologic therapy for sleep apnea in phase II clinical trials.
d. the comparison of Autotitrating Positive Airway Pressure (APAP) devices to fixed pressure Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) devices with respect to cardiovascular risk factors, for the treatment of sleep apnea, with the long term goal of ultimately identifying the patient populations served/not served by the APAP treatment. Dr. Prasad studied medicine at Lady Hardinge Medical College in New Delhi, India. She was the first fellow to use the Center for Narcolepsy, Sleep and Health Research as part of a fellowship in the specialty of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep Medicine and Allergy. She was one of only two fellows to have their program funded by the National Institute of Health. Dr. Prasad became involved in clinical research in the area of sleep medicine under the mentorship of Dr. David Carley. Now having completed her fellowship and joining the UIC faculty, she plans a career in academic medicine, focusing on clinical outcomes research in the field of sleep medicine.
