2012 Distinguished Nurse Alumna
Janet M. Engstrom, PhD, MS, RN, CNM, WHNP-BC
Dr. Janet Engstrom is the Associate Dean for Research at Frontier Nursing
University, the birthplace of nurse-midwifery in the United States, and
Professor and Researcher, Department of Women, Children and Family Nursing,
Rush University College of Nursing.
Dr. Engstrom was an early proponent of
evidence-based practice and is a well-known scholar whose research focuses
on the health benefits of human milk feeding for premature infants in the
neonatal intensive care unit, and the reliability and validity of physical
measurements such as infant weight and length. She is both an alumna (PhD
'85; MS '81) and former faculty member of the UIC College of Nursing where
she also served as Program Director of the Nurse-Midwifery and Women's
Health Care Nurse Practitioner Programs.
In addition to having received
numerous awards for excellence in teaching, Dr. Engstrom is a Fellow of the
American College of Nurse-Midwives, and a recipient of the Jonas Salk Health
Leadership Award in Nursing from the Chicago Area March of Dimes Foundation.
