Research / Discovery
Dr. Corte's research is focused on identity impairments as a cognitive vulnerability for adolescent risk behavior, with particular attention to gender differences in these effects. Dr. Corte recently completed a faculty scholarship in the UIC Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) program (K12 HD055892-01), a mentored program through the UIC Center of Excellence in Women's Health. Dr. Corte has completed studies to identify specific identity impairments that are associated with alcohol dependence in young adults and risk factors for alcohol problems in preadolescents. She is also a co-investigator on a grant to examine identity impairments as a vulnerability for a triad of risk behaviors (disordered eating, alcohol use and tobacco use) in Mexican American women. In 2004, Dr. Corte received a Junior Investigator award from the Research Society on Alcoholism, and in 2006, she received the "outstanding faculty manuscript award" from Sage Publications and the Midwest Nursing Research Society for her paper entitled "Self-cognitions in antisocial alcohol dependence and recovery" that was published in Western Journal of Nursing Research in 2007.
