Research / Discovery
Dr. Heinschel's research interests include Interactive Guided Imagery and Motivational Interviewing modalities. Her current research interest is the use of motivational interviewing for obese and overweight individuals' efforts to change their behavior. Past and present masters and doctor of nursing practice project committees involve(d) motivational interviewing, cardiovascular nursing, and integration of mental and physical health care.
Teaching / Learning
Dr. Heinschel has taught nursing for over 15 years, five of them at the University of Illinois College of Nursing. She has held faculty appointments at the associate, baccalaureate, and graduate levels, and currently teaches core masters/DNP courses and psychiatric – mental health nurse practitioner courses. As a teacher and practicing nurse practitioner, she avidly participates in continuing education relevant to her specialty as well as to teaching/learning strategies.
Service / Practice
Dr. Heinschel has been active at the national level in the American Heart Association, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, and American Holistic Nurses Association. Most recently, she participated in American Nurses Credentialing Center 's Role Delineation study for the Psychiatric – Mental Health Nurse Practitioner exam, and was one of 10 psychiatric – mental health nurse practitioners in the country selected to set the final standards for the 2010 certification exam. She volunteers at Healing Pathways, a free resource center for persons affected by cancer, and is a frequent guest lecturer/preceptor/collaborator for the University of Illinois College of Medicine.
Dr. Heinschel practices as an adult psychiatric – mental health nurse practitioner in a university primary care clinic. A previous critical care nurse, Dr. Heinschel has worked at the bedside in a variety of settings, ranging from a small rural hospital to a large university medical center.
Personal
A native of Rockton, Illinois, Judie Heinschel joined the UIC College of Nursing faculty fulltime in 2008, having previously held an adjunct faculty position there. She enjoys jazz and some blues music, gardening, physical exercise, reading inspirational non-fiction, cooking and baking, family and almost anything outdoors. Favorite travel spots include Colorado, California, Hawaii -- beaches and mountains in general.
