Research / Discovery
Dr. Sparbel's background includes an NINR fellowship at the 2003 Summer Genetics Institute, a focus area in clinical genetics in her PhD program and postdoctoral fellowship in clinical genetics at the University of Iowa. Her research interests include decision-making regarding genetic testing, impact of genetic information on individuals and families, and application of genetic technologies in the primary care clinical setting. She also has research interests in qualitative methods, cultural implications of care, continuity of patient care, and public health applications.
Teaching / Learning
Dr. Sparbel has taught for the UIC College of Nursing since 1998 and has teaching experience on the BSN and graduate level, with a focus in the Family Nurse Practitioner program. She has been instrumental in the FNP clinical management and public health courses, developing online education content and methods. Dr. Sparbel also teaches core CON graduate courses such as the graduate nursing Issues in Advanced Practice, Nursing Inquiry I and Evidence-Based Practice.
Service / Practice
Dr. Sparbel is active in the Midwest Nursing Research Society (2009-2010 Genetics Research Section Chair), the Quad City Area APN/PA Alliance (co-Founder and first President, also held Board and Secretary positions), and is the 2010-2011 President of the International Society of Nurses in Genetics (ISONG). She has clinical FNP experience in school-based health centers and in primary care general practice.
Personal
Dr. Sparbel is married with two grown children. Favorite interests include movies, traveling, and music.
