Research / Discovery
The goal of Dr. Finnegan's program of research is to create and test interventions to prevent and reduce symptom burden in long-term cancer survivors. Her current research focuses on adult survivors of childhood cancers (ACC-survivors) who experience five cardinal symptoms (pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, psychological distress, and difficulty concentrating) that often cluster together and act synergistically, leading to significant distress. She is funded by the National Cancer Institute to refine and test a ‘symptom cluster experience profile' model, using data from over 7000 ACC-survivors who participate in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study. In 2009, in recognition of the significance of her work and its potential impact on clinical practice and policy, she received the Outstanding Researcher Award from the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties

Teaching / Learning
Dr. Finnegan has extensive teaching and curriculum development experience. She has received two teaching awards at UIC – 2007 Honors College Fellow of the Year and Council for Excellence in Teaching and Learning 2008 Teaching Recognition Program. She is also a member of the UIC College of Nursing Academy of Distinguished Teachers.

Dr. Finnegan teaches in the PhD and Master's programs at UIC. One course that she teaches every Spring semester is NUSC 581 Health Services and Health Behavior Research, an advanced quantitative methods course for doctoral students to gain a deeper conceptual understanding of how to use sophisticated analytic models to advance the science in their specific areas of research. She is a research chair and advisor for many PhD and master's students. She also mentors undergraduate students as an Honors College Fellow.

Service / Practice
Dr. Finnegan serves on the UIC Honors College Council and several College of Nursing committees. She also participates in many regional and national professional organizations and serves as a manuscript reviewer for several journals.
