Teaching / Learning
Mr. Patel teaches courses in statistics as applied in the health sciences. The Intermediate Statistics (NUSC 525) course is attended by College of Nursing students, as well as those from other health science departments. This course utilizes the SPSS software on personal computers. Biometrics and Applied Statistics (NUMS 545) is useful for doctoral students, residents, and fellows. Multivariate Analysis in Health Sciences is a sequel to Intermediate Statistics and is useful for doctoral work and publication. Students and faculty members apply statistical techniques like Design of Experiments, Regression Analysis, Logistic Regression, Randomization Tests, Sample Size Estimation, and Power Analysis in their work and in grant applications. Help is also provided in Path Analysis and construction of Structural Equation Modeling. Conventional Forecasting Models and Harmonic Analysis are used in Time Series applications. Upon encountering missing values in time series analysis, a procedure known as Method of Partition is applied to estimate the periodicity of the biological system. Simulation studies are considered for some research problems that may not have the closed form of a mathematical solution. Programs have been written for Receiver Operating Characteristic that are more appropriate for the theory of signal detection for binary or rating-scale data.
