Advanced Practice Nurse Forensic Certificate Program
Certificate Requirements
In order to receive the Advanced Practice Nurse Forensic Certificate, students must complete the following courses:

Forensic Nursing Science
Focuses on the background, development, and theoretical foundations of forensic nursing. |

Forensic Health Care Documentation and Evidence Collection
Focuses on the integration of the criminal justice, social service, and legal systems into the nursing care of people affected by violence. Prerequisite(s): NUEL 536.

Forensic Health Care for Vulnerable Populations
Focuses on the specific needs of vulnerable populations as victims of violence. Prerequisite(s): NUEL 537. |

Forensic Practicum
Completion of a practicum in a specialty practice area focusing on victims, families, and alleged perpetrators. Provides an opportunity to apply knowledge and skills with a selected population of interest in a forensic setting. Prerequisite(s): NUEL 537 and consent of the instructor. |

The courses must be taken in the order listed. See the Schedule of Classes for course offerings. No transfer credit will be accepted toward the certificate.
Academic Policies
Students in the Forensic Certificate are held to the academic policies of the UIC College of Nursing, which state that students are expected to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 (“B” average) throughout the program. See the Academic Standards and Policies—Graduate section of the College of Nursing Student Handbook for more information. Students wishing to transfer academic credit earned in the certificate program to a graduate degree program must receive a minimum grade of “B” in each course to be transferred.
Additional Requirements
- Computer and Internet access
- Meet in Chicago twice a semester for the first three online courses
- May need to meet certain requirements as mandated by the clinical practicum site. See Clinical Compliance webpage for more information.
Upon completion of the program, students will receive a certificate from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
