I take initiative and represent the student body throughout
the college and outside the college. I’ve learned at UIC
that you can receive a great education, meet a lot of very important
people in the field of nursing, and network with people. You
can find a huge number of people – names you’ve never
heard of, faces you’ve never seen – who are willing
to lend a helping hand if you approach them. These are nurses
and researchers who impact our everyday practice. UIC is a small
community within the large picture of nursing.
If a student aspires to have more of an impact, or wants to
create more out of their career as a nurse, there’s such
a huge spectrum of areas to get involved in. You can definitely
find those things at UIC. If you can’t find it directly,
then there are people who can give you names and help you find
others who will lead to your interests. Whether it be references
for graduate school, or getting involved with grants and research
projects, or working with community organizations in the UIC
neighborhood, where there are a lot of underserved, underrepresented
patients who can benefit from our services, even while we’re
students.
As a student leader, I’m devoted to getting more of the
student body involved with the nursing community and the community
around the college. It’s important to do it now, when they’re
students, so they can carry that on after they graduate. We can
all walk out and be a floor nurse, but there’s so much
more to being a nurse and being involved and serving the community.
