Our Mission

Welcome to the UIC Occupational Health Nursing Web Site!

More and more frequently, nurses are being asked to undertake increasingly complex and demanding roles as health care moves into the community setting. For occupational health nurses, responsible for promoting and protecting the health and safety of workers, these challenges have brought tremendous opportunities. Occupational health nurses with advanced degrees hold management, consulting, research, and educational and advanced practice clinical positions.

The Occupational Health Nursing (OHN) Program of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) offers both master's and doctoral degrees in nursing with a concentration in occupational health nursing. Our program is unsurpassed in providing students with the emerging competencies required of advanced practice OHN practitioners, managers, and researchers. Students participate in classes and field experiences in a rich interdisciplinary environment with occupational medicine, agricultural health and safety, industrial hygiene, and other public health students.

The UIC OHN Program is part of the UIC Great Lakes Center for Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health and is designated a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center in Occupational and Environmental Health. UIC is one of 17 Education and Research Centers (ERC) funded by the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) to provide graduate-level academic and research training for occupational health and safety professionals. Our funding as an ERC extends nearly 30 years.
