Advanced Nursing Leadership Certificate Program
About the Program
The Advanced Practice Palliative Care Nurse Certificate Program (APPCN) is a life- span oriented specialty certificate program at the UIC College of Nursing that will prepare advanced practice nurses to serve neonates, children, adults, or the elderly in rural and medically underserved areas (MUAs). Graduates of the APPCN Program will be especially versed in the science and practice of end-of-life and palliative care and in legal, ethical, and socio-political issues related to our nation's top causes of morbidity and mortality (i.e., cancer, heart disease, stroke, congenital disorders, chronic childhood problems, and neurologic and psychiatric conditions). In practice, APPCNs will be aligned with palliative care services, pain and symptom management clinics, hospice and/or home health facilities, palliative care research programs, or managed health care systems, fostering seamless care from an individual or population perspective.
Master Students Dual Certificate
Master students will enroll in one of the following population-based programs: Acute Care, Geriatric, Perinatal or Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist or Acute Care, Adult or Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, and will declare a specialized concentration in palliative and end-of-life-care. Students electing a specialized concentration in palliative care will take three additional courses and have at least one of their clinical practicum courses in a palliative care setting. Graduates of the program will be prepared for certification both in their own specialty area and in palliative care.
Post Master Students Certificate
Post Master palliative care students will take the three additional palliative care courses and will need their clinical practicum courses in a palliative care setting (work hours may be acceptable). After completing the three theory courses they will be prepared for certification in palliative care.
Continuing Education Students
Nurses and other health science students (discipline such as Social Work,
Medicine and Pharmacy) may take these three palliative care courses for CNE
credits through the Institute for Healthcare Innovation. Please contact
