Advanced Practice Palliative Care Nursing Certificate

About the Program

The Advanced Practice Palliative Care Nursing (APPCN) Certificate was developed to educate nurses to better meet the needs of caring for patients who are seriously ill and dying and who require end-of-life and palliative care treatment. It is grounded in a holistic perspective that recognizes that the individual is part of a family, a community and a society.

The certificate coursework will prepare nurses to better provide comprehensive, culturally appropriate, evidence-based, and coordinated care to seriously ill and dying patients and their families in a variety of settings:

 

• Palliative care programs
• Acute care settings
• Home care services
• Pain and sympton management clinics
• Hospice and/or home health facilities
• Managed health care systems
• Clinics working with patients with chronic illness such as renal failure, cancer, heart failure, Alzheimer's disease

This online program consists of three courses (3 semester hours each) and can be completed in two to three semesters of part-time study. Courses are offered during the fall and spring semesters.

Students enrolled in UIC graduate programs may also enroll in the certificate or take individual courses as electives.

Program Costs
Because the APPCN Certificate is a fully online program, students are assessed e-tuition. The current e-tuition rate (2012-2013) is $762 per credit hour. Students currently enrolled in a UIC graduate program are charged range tuition.

Continuing Education Students
Nurses and other health professionals (in disciplines such as social work, medicine and pharmacy) who are not degree-seeking may take the three palliative care online courses for CE credits through the Institute for Health Care Innovation at the College of Nursing.
