BSN: Admission Requirements
General Admission Requirements
Admission is competitive and the average GPA of students admitted each fall is higher than the minimum required.
1. 2.75/4.00 cumulative GPA in all college level course work and 2.50/4.00 GPA in the five natural science prerequisite courses.
2. Prerequisite coursework must be completed prior to enrollment with a minimum grade of “C” or better. An application may be submitted while coursework is in progress as long as all prerequisites are completed by the enrollment start date.
3. Three of the five pre-requisite natural science courses (Anatomy & Physiology I and II, Microbiology, General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry) must be complete prior to application submission. Natural science courses must have been completed within seven years prior to enrollment.Transfer guides for many colleges and universities in the Chicago area can be found online.
Prerequisite Courses
Prerequisite coursework can be completed at UIC through The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) or at another college or university. For more information about applying to LAS consult The Office of Admissions and Records.

Background Check and Drug Testing
All students will be required to have a background check and drug test upon admission. If the results of either requirement indicate that the student was not truthful on the initial application to the College of Nursing or would not be eligible for placement at the College's practicum agencies, the student's admission will be rescinded. Students may be required to repeat either requirement should the practicum agency require more frequent testing. If at any time during the period of enrollment, the student's background check or drug test results preclude placement in a practicum agency, the student will be required to withdraw from the program. At time of application for licensure students will be required to submit fingerprinting and be reviewed for eligibility by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).
Early Admission
Students meeting the additional requirements can apply for
an early admission:
- minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25/4.00
- minimum science GPA of 2.80/4.00
- a minimum of three pre-requisite science courses must be completed (Anatomy
Physiology I & II, Microbiology, General Chemistry and Organic
Chemistry).
In order to apply for early admission, you must submit an application by the October 15 deadline. Applicants will be notified in December regarding the status of their application.
Those not accepted by early admission will still be considered for regular admission and will receive notification of the final decision in April.
Freshman Admissions
The College of Nursing does not admit freshman to the BSN program as there are two years of college level pre-requisite courses required. Those seeking admission to UIC as freshman should first apply to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and designate their major as undeclared. Students can list pre-nursing as their educational goal. Applications can be found on the UIC website.
Those seeking admission to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) as freshman should apply to either the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or the College of Applied Health. Applications can be found on the UIUC website.
Guaranteed Professional Program Admissions (GPPA)
As a freshman, you can apply for guaranteed admission to the
upper-division nursing program. The additional requirements
for this program include:
- ACT score of 28 or higher OR an SAT score of 1240 or higher
- ranked in the top 15% of the high school class
