BSN: How to Apply

Students are admitted for the fall semester only. Applications must be completed and transcripts must be postmarked by October 15th for early admission decision and January 15th for final decision. In order to give you and your recommenders enough time to complete the components of the nursing supplemental application (see #3 below), it is strongly recommended that you do not wait until the deadline to apply.

Please download the application checklist below and read carefully to ensure you submit all required materials accurately. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Fall 2010 Application Materials

A complete application for the BSN program includes all of the following:

1. UIC Undergraduate Transfer Application
*Please select the category that pertains to you and follow the appropriate instructions for that category.

Transfer applicants from community colleges or universities are strongly encouraged to complete this online transfer application for faster processing. Please be sure to enter a valid e-mail address in the application. A nonrefundable application fee ($40 domestic; $50 international) is required. Payment may be made by credit card or by sending a check or money order in US currency payable to the University of Illinois. Be sure to indicate the appropriate code for either the Chicago (BSN Nursing) or Urbana (BSN Urbana site) from the drop down menu.

Current University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) students need to e-mail conapply@uic.edu to request the Nursing Supplemental application. No fee is required for current UIC students and they are exempt from filling out the UIC transfer application. Call Sue at 312-996-7771 if your fee is not automatically waived after a reasonable amount of time. Be sure to indicate in the email whether you are applying to either the Chicago or Urbana region.  

Current University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) students are strongly encouraged to complete this online transfer application for faster processing. No fee is required for current UIUC students. Call Sue at 312-996-7771 if your fee is not automatically waived after a reasonable amount of time. Please be sure to enter a valid e-mail address in the application. Be sure to indicate the appropriate code for either the Chicago (BSN Nursing) or Urbana (BSN Urbana site) from the drop down menu.

Applicants who have a bachelor’s degree in another field and are applying for second bachelor’s degree need to fill out a paper Undergraduate Transfer Application and letter of petition. Second Bachelor’s Degree candidates cannot apply on-line. A nonrefundable application fee ($40 domestic; $50 international) is required. Please be sure to enter a valid e-mail address in the application. Be sure to indicate in the paper application the appropriate code for either the Chicago or Urbana region.

2. Official Transcripts
Official transcripts must be sent from each university and college you have attended. Send all transcripts together in one envelope to the address below. For early decision applicants, all transcripts must be postmarked by October 15th. Failure to meet the October 15th deadline will result in the application being deferred until the final decision review. For final decision applicants, transcripts must be postmarked by January 15th. UIC graduates must submit transcripts for any work completed after graduation. Current and former UIC students are not required to submit UIC transcripts. High school transcripts are not required from any applicant.

3. Nursing Supplemental Application:

Be sure to check your "spam" and "junk" folders if the e-mail link hasn't arrived in your primary inbox. If you do not receive the nursing supplemental application after ten days please email conapply@uic.edu.

Current UIC students need to email conapply@uic.edu to request the Nursing Supplemental application. Current UIC students are exempt from submitting the Undergraduate Transfer Application. Be sure to indicate in the email whether you are applying to either the Chicago or Urbana region.

Applicants who have a bachelor’s degree in another field will receive the nursing supplemental application after submitting the paper Undergraduate Transfer Application. Because this paper application is not submitted electronically, it recommended that you apply early enough to allow plenty of time for processing. This application will come via the email you provided in the UIC transfer application. Do not delete this e-mail. Be sure to check your "spam" and "junk" folders if the e-mail link hasn't arrived in your primary inbox. If you do not receive the nursing supplemental application after a few weeks please email conapply@uic.edu.

Applicants can check the status of their supplemental application and electronic recommendations by referring to the e-mail they received with the link to the Nursing Supplemental Application. If you are having difficulty finding the e-mail, search for “conapply@uic.edu” as the sender.

In preparation for completing the supplemental application, you can update your resume and begin working on the following essay questions:

What experiences have you had with healthcare? (200 words maximum)

What experiences you have had with being a leader? (200 words maximum)

Why are you interested in a career in nursing? (200 words maximum)

Have you participated in any activities to learn more about nursing? (200 words maximum)

What life experiences have influenced your interest in nursing? (200 words maximum)

What experiences have prepared you to work with diverse populations (i.e. racial/ethnic, age, gender, socio-economic) seeking health care? (200 words maximum)

Tell us about some of the challenges or successes in your life that have influenced your academic performance. (200 words maximum)

Describe a situation in which you overcame a significant obstacle or barrier in achieving your goals (such as academic, economic, language, racial/ethnic, etc.) (200 words maximum)

3a. Two Electronic Recommendations:
Instructions for submitting the two recommendations are included in the above Nursing Supplemental Application. Hard copies will not be accepted due to the fact that they will be submitted electronically by your recommenders. Please notify your recommenders that they will be receiving an e-mail from UIC College of Nursing with further instructions. Please note: Certain e-mail providers may direct the correspondence to a “junk” or “spam” folder. If the e-mail is never received, it is the applicant’s responsibility to obtain an alternate e-mail address from their recommender and resend the electronic recommendation.

At least one recommendation should come from someone who can speak to your scholastic ability. The other letter can be from a professional or academic reference. Acceptable references include work and volunteer supervisors. Personal references such as friends, relatives and co-workers will automatically be disregarded. It is the applicant's responsibility to verify that their electronic recommendations have been submitted.

Electronic recommendations from previous application cycles are not retained. New electronic recommendation must be submitted for each admissions cycle.

3b. Prerequisite Self Evaluation Form: Word.
Instructions for this form are included in the Nursing Supplemental Application and should be used as a guide only. Do not mail this document in.

International Applicants only
TOEFL is required for applicants whose native language is other than English with a minimum score of 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer based). For the TOEFL ibt scores, the minimums are Writing-21, Speaking-20, Listening-17, Reading-19 and total score-80. Please note that TOEFL scores over two years old are invalid. For the official IELTS, a minimum total score of 6.5 is required, with sub-section minimums of Listening-6, Writing-6, Reading-6 and Speaking-6.

Official academic credentials including:

  • List of all subjects/courses studied each year
  • Grades or examination results received
  • Maximum and minimum grades obtainable
  • Certified/attested English translation of all credentials

Upon being recommended for admission, evidence of financial support for the first year is also required.

Scholarship Application (optional): Word.
Undergraduate scholarship applications will be available in January and are due April 1st of each year. Students applying for scholarships are also required to file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form with the UIC Office of Financial Aid and submit a copy of their SAR (Student Aid Report) with their scholarship application. If you are seeking scholarship funding, you should apply by the deadline although you may not have an admission decision.

Undergraduate Admission Decision Appeal Process

An applicant may appeal an admission decision, although a reversal of an initial decision is unlikely.  Appeals may be submitted only by the applicant and should include significant new information that was not a part of the original application.  If you choose to appeal, you must submit your request in writing to the UIC Office of Admissions and Records.
