Graduate Entry Program (GEP): About the Program

For applicants with a baccalaureate degree in another field

The Graduate Entry program (GEP) is designed for individuals who hold a baccalaureate degree in a field other than nursing. It is a highly competitive program that attracts the adult learner with a variety of backgrounds.
The program begins every January and is divided into two components. The first component is a highly intensive 15-month program (four semesters) in the foundations of nursing. Upon successful completion students are eligible to take the National Council Licensing Examination – Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN). The first 15 months is only available on a full time basis and only available at the Chicago campus. We highly recommend that students do not work during this first 15 months.

After successful completion of the NCLEX, students spend the remaining time completing a master’s degree in one of the specialty areas offered at UIC. (GEP students are unable to apply to the joint degree options until they are in their 4th semester). The MS component of the program can be done on a full time or part time basis and can be completed at any of our regional sites. Working as an RN in the MS component is highly encouraged. After completion of all Master's requirements students are awarded a degree of Master's of Science in Nursing (MS).

More questions about GEP? Please visit our Frequently Asked Questions or attend an Information session. We highly recommend attending a session if at all possible. They are designed to give you a full overview of the GEP program as well all other programs you may be eligible for in the future. There is plenty of time for questions and current students are available to discuss their experiences.
