Graduate Entry Program (GEP)
applicants with a baccalaureate degree in another field
Program Description
The Graduate Entry Program (GEP) is designed for individuals who hold a baccalaureate degree in a field other than nursing. It is a highly competitive program that attracts the adult learner with a variety of backgrounds.
The program begins every January and is divided into two components. The first component is a highly intensive 15-month program (four semesters) in the foundations of nursing. Upon successful completion students are eligible to take the National Council Licensing Examination – Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN). The first 15 months is only available on a full time basis and only available at the Chicago campus. We highly recommend that students do not work during this first 15 months.
After successful completion of the NCLEX, students spend the remaining time completing the advanced practice portion of their master’s degree in one of our specialty areas. Student must select thier specialty area when they submit their application. (GEP students interested in applying to one of the joint degree options can do so after they are enrolled in program). The specialty component of the program is a blended curriculum that can be done on a full time or part time basis and can be completed at any of our regional sites. Students may work as an RN during the specialty component. After completion of all requirements students are awarded a degree of Master of Science (MS) in Nursing. The
UIC’s Master of Science degree in nursing builds upon your skills and education to transform you into a highly skilled, competent advanced practice nurse (APN), a nurse leader in administration or a community leader. The program emphasizes vulnerable populations, evidence-based practice, and scholarly activity.
