Graduate Scholarship Descriptions

Academy of International Leadership Award
Awarded to undergraduate and graduate students based on academic merit and financial need. Preference given to students from underrepresented groups.

Advanced Education Nurse Traineeships
Awarded based on availability of funds and guidelines determined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the College of Nursing. Students must be enrolled full-time (unless in final year of program) and be a US citizen or permanent resident and admitted to a degreed program. Full or partial waiver of tuition and fees provided, but no stipend. Cumulative traineeship support may not exceed 36 months.

Beverly J. McElmurry Scholarship Fund
Awarded to PhD candidates with a past record of nursing leadership and strong evidence of a research focus appropriate to global health concerns, preference to international students. Established in 2004 to honor Dr. Beverly J. McElmurry for her contributions to the nursing profession locally and globally. Learn more.

Board of Trustees Tuition and Service Fee Waivers
Provided by the Graduate College, this award is for full-time and part-time tuition and service waivers for MS and PhD students. Students must be enrolled as a degree candidate and not hold a waiver from any other source, including an assistantship, fellowship, or other university employment and must remain in good academic standing.

Boothroyd Scholars Program
Awarded to undergraduate and graduate students based on academic merit and financial need. Preference given to students from underrepresented groups.

Chieko Onoda Endowed Scholarship Fund
Awarded to graduate students, preference to international students who are residents of the Southeast Asian nations. Established to honor Professor Chieko Onoda for her work on behalf of the international students at the College of Nursing. Learn more.

Craig and Sarah Allen Fund in Memory of Hal Gold
Awarded to students in the Nurse Midwifery program. Established by Craig and Sarah Allen in memory of Hal Gold.

Elizabeth M. Roche Memorial Scholarship Fund
Awarded to graduate students in good standing. Established by Arlene and John Norsym in memory of John Norsym's sister, Elizabeth Roche.

Helen K. Grace Diversity Award
Awarded to graduate students. Established by Dr. Helen Grace, former dean of UIC College of Nursing.

Irving B. Harris Faculty Scholar Initiative
Awarded to graduate students in the Department of Women, Family, and Children who demonstrate financial need and academic achievement and whose studies will ultimately improve early childhood development.

Jeanne A. Gittings Memorial Scholarship Fund
Awarded to graduate nursing students in the Quad Cities area, with preference to students who demonstrate financial need and good academic standing. Established in memory of Jeanne Gittings, former Quad Cities Regional Program librarian, in tribute to her outstanding commitment to students and faculty.

Joyce Roberts Midwifery Scholarship Fund
Awarded to students in the Nurse Midwifery program. Established in honor of Dr. Joyce Roberts, former Director of the Nurse Midwifery program and Department Head.

Kellogg Family Peoria Nursing Scholarship Fund
Awarded to students in the Peoria regional program. Established by Robah Kellogg, long-time member of the Peoria Regional Program faculty, and others.

Marguerite A. Dixon Award Fund
Awarded to PhD graduate students with outstanding academic performances, preference to students of African-American descent.

Norma R. Kelly Peoria Nursing Scholarship Fund
Awarded to students in the Peoria regional program. Established by Dr. Norma R. Kelly, former Peoria Regional Program Director, and others.

Quad Cities Classic Nursing Scholarship Fund
Awarded to students in the Quad Cities Regional Program

Regional Nursing Scholarship Fund
Awarded to students from the regional campuses (Peoria, Quad Cities, Rockford, Urbana). Established by alumni from the regional programs in 1994 and fully endowed in 1995 with a generous gift from a regional faculty member and her husband.

Seth D. Rosen Memorial Endowed Research Fund
Awarded to graduate students to be used towards their research endeavors. Established in memory of Seth Rosen, husband of Denise Rosen Sobotka, a long time staff member at the College.

Virginia M. Ohlson International Studies Fund
Provides scholarships for international students and support for the Annual World Health Day Symposia. Established by Dr. Virginia M. Ohlson, former Dean and founder of the Office for International Studies at the UIC College of Nursing. Learn more.

Awarded to undergraduate and graduate students who exhibit academic achievement, financial need, and leadership.

Dorothy J. Dethloff Scholarship
Awarded to undergraduates based on financial need and academic merit.

Emily C. Cardew Dean's Fund
Awarded to undergraduates of junior or senior status who exhibit high scholastic achievement. Established in honor of the late Emily Cardew, the first Dean of the UIC College of Nursing.

Gertrude Hess Nursing Scholarship
Awarded to College of Nursing Students based on financial need. Established by the Estate of Louise H. Landau in memory of Gertrude Hess.

Gloria A. Henderson Scholarship
Awarded to an undergraduate of junior or senior status enrolled at the Chicago campus with high scholastic achievement and exhibited leadership in extracurricular activities. Established by Professor Emerita Gloria Henderson. Learn more.

Helene Fuld Health Trust Scholarship for Baccalaureate Nursing Students
Awarded to students in the Baccalaureate Nursing program.

Jean Christenson Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund
Awarded annually to two undergraduate students based on financial need and good academic standing with first preference given to students whose legal residence is the state of Illinois. Established by Robert Christenson, in memory of his mother, Jean Christenson, who was a nurse.

Kathryn Venolia Memorial Scholarship Fund
Awarded to an undergraduate senior with an outstanding academic record and contributions to school and/or community.

Lazzara Family Foundation Nursing Scholarship
Awarded to two outstanding undergraduate seniors. Established by the Lazzara Family Foundation.

Lisa Corsini Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to undergraduate nursing students enrolled at the Urbana-Champaign campus with preference to students whose legal residence is either the State of Illinois or Italy and who demonstrate a passion for nursing, financial need, and academic merit. Established in 2002 to honor the memory of Lisa Corsini, a nursing student in the Urbana Champaign Regional Program, by her family and friends. Learn more.

Awarded to students in the Urbana Regional Program.

W. E. Van Doren Scholarship Fund
