Fatigue as a Symptom of Coronary Artery Disease
Funding Source: Midwest Nursing Research Society (MNRS)
Dates: 4/01/10– 3/31/11
Abstract: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in the United States, with 16.8 million Americans affected by the disease (Lloyd-Jones et al., 2009). Recognizing CHD symptoms is essential for early diagnosis and management. Chest pain is considered a hallmark symptom; however, other important symptoms may be discounted by both patients and providers. The research that has been conducted on fatigue has primarily focused on acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and much of the emphasis has been on women, limiting the generalizability of the findings. The proposed study will use a mixed methods approach to identify, describe, and examine fatigue related to CHD in order to develop a more complete definition of the phenomenon.
