Abstract: The Department of Nursing Science within the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) consists of two-degree programs, a Master of Science (MS) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The focus of the MS program is the Preparation of advanced practice nurses to practice in a complex and changing health care system. At the completion of the program, the MS graduate is expected to: 1) demonstrate competencies for advanced practice nursing, 2) analyze current knowledge for nursing practice and inquiry, 3) use knowledge to adapt nursing interventions, 4) evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions and health systems on outcomes, 5) conduct scholarly activity to advance nursing knowledge, and 6) demonstrate leadership in nursing and multi-disciplinary health environments. The emphasis of the PhD program is on preparing scientists capable of being principal investigators in research- intensive academic and health service environments. The objectives of the PhD program are to prepare students to 1) critically synthesize knowledge from nursing and related disciplines to contribute to nursing knowledge and inquiry, 2) conduct original research and scholarly work that contribute to the generation and dissemination of new knowledge relevant to health and the discipline of nursing, 3) continue to develop as experts within an area of inquiry important to nursing and health, and 4) provide leadership in nursing, research, health care and policy.
