The crossing point over the South Fork (or "Bubbly Creek") of the Chicago
and Alton; the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fé and Chicago, Madison and
Northern railroads. Actually, contrary to the original caption, this is a
swing bridge. Note the mucky condition of the water in the river. It was
much worse farther south -- in particular the stock yard slip (or, more
officially: the East Fork of the South Fork of the South Branch of the
Chicago river). That slip was eventually filled in, as it was considered
unredeemable. The bridge here was soon replaced with a drawbridge.
