| This railroad was known by many other names
before it was the Chicago & Alton Railroad. The line was the quickest
way to get to Springfield and Saint Louis. The "Alton" railroad also had
the distinction of being the first direct connection between Chicago and
the Mississippi river at Alton, Illinois.
