This view of Loomis (formerly Deering, and earlier Greene) street looks to
the southeast, from just south of Archer avenue. This is the section of
town that was first to develop after the river/canal front. Note the wide
variety of housing styles and types found on this one street. The
cross-street at the end is Thirty-first street, which developed into a
business street. Beyond it and standing over the neighborhood is Saint
Mary of Perpetual Help (Polish) church between Thirty-second street and
place. The spire on the left is Holy Cross Monastery, which had formerly
been Immaculate Conception (German) church at Thirty-first and Aberdeen
(at one time Mospratt) streets. Thirty-first street connected the German
section here, near the South Fork, and the one farther east, near the
Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago railway. |
